Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The shoppe had been in Red Hook for over 50 years, however I have owned it for seven.
What is your primary product or service?
We sell fabric and fiber art supplies, and of course run workshops and clubs to help you reach your vision. We can not only help you create something beautiful and useful, but also lower stress levels and relax in the process.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have been stitching pretty much since I could thread a needle. My first ever real job was in a fabric shop, I didn't even have a drivers liscence yet, ahd to walk home. I have an art background, teaching it in the public schools for over a decade, and wrote my masters thesis on dyes and pigments from the Middle Ages. I know it's a bit obscure, but obsessions can take you to interesting places.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
The Art outlook is what makes us different. We also do much more work by hand that most other fabric shops. Hand stitching, no matter the style, allows a more tactile experience and builds in a more personal expression.
